Incident Details:

Captain Joseph Palczynski, Star # Unknown, aged 73 years, was a 49 year, 7 month, 9 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, unit of assigned to the Detective Bureau.

On March 5, 1935, Captain Palczynski was on duty working in the Women’s Court room at 1121 South State Street. A riot broke out in the courtroom he was working in. During the melee, Captain Palczynski pushed into the crowd in an attempt to restore the peace. While doing so, he suffered a fatal heart attack and was shoved to the floor and pummeled by several offenders. He was then carried into the judge’s chambers and later pronounced dead on the scene. No charges were filed in connection with Captain Palczynski’s death.

Captain Palczynski was waked at his residence located at 1025 North Sacramento Avenue, his funeral mass was also held in his residence and he was laid to rest on March 8, 1935 in Oakridge Cemetery, 4301 West Roosevelt Road, Hillside, Illinois. His grave is located in Section 15, Lot 487, Space 1.

Captain Joseph Palczynski, born June 29, 1861, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on July 24, 1885. He earned 5 Credible Mentions during his career. Captain Palczynski was promoted to Patrol Sergeant on September 14, 1893 and Lieutenant on May 31, 1895. Following his promotion to Lieutenant the police Department was brought under the Civil Service and he was reduced in rank back to Patrolman on March 21, 1898. He was promoted back to Lieutenant under the Civil Service on March 14, 1908. and Captain on October 6, 1925.

Captain Palczynski was survived by his wife, Tillie (nee Myk); children: Casmir, Edward (CPD), Helen, Joseph, Jr. and Walter; siblings: Anastasia Kallas, Josephine Przybylska, Julia Kornecki and Maximillian, grandchildren: Arthur, Edward, Joseph, Lucille, Mary and Walter and great-grandchild: Arthur.
